Rules Of The Game

   WELCOME TO MIDWEST SELECTS - Minnesota's newest hockey challenge!
  • Each team will consist of a maximum of seventeen players (15 skaters and 2 goalies). No more than three adult staff will be allowed in the player box during the game.
  • All players must wear approved helmets with approved facemasks as defined by AHAUS and/or High School League rules. Mouth guards and full hockey equipment are also required. Any player on the ice during a game without this equipment will be in violation and will received an automatic misconduct penalty. Helmets must be worn on the bench at all times.
  • Squirt, U10, and U12 level games will consist of two periods of 20 minutes top time’ Peewee, Bantam, U14 and U16 games will be 22 minutes stop time. Each goalie will play one period each game at all levels.
  • Should there be a six-goal differential at any time during the game, running time will commence. If the differential falls below six, the game will return to stop time.
  • During the preliminary round resurfacing will take place at half time of all Peewee, Bantam , U14, U16, U19 games. On Championship day resurfacing will take place at halftime of all games.
  • All teams must be dressed and ready to play one-half hour before published starting times.
  • Penalties:
      Minor 2 minutes
      Major 5 minutes
      Misconduct 10 minutes
      Fighting Tournament Disqualification

    In the event of coincidental penalties, neither team will skate shorthanded.
    Any player receiving three penalties in one game will be disqualified for the remainder of that game and will be reinstated to play in the next game.
  • Preliminary Rounds
    Scoring: WIN=2 points
    TIE=1 Point
    LOSS=0 Point
    In case of a tie, there will be one five-minute sudden death period.
    There are no time-outs in the preliminary round. If sudden death overtime ends in a tie each team gets one point in the standings.
  • Championship Round:
    • Teams will be ranked based on points earned during the preliminaryround.
    • The top two teams by points will play in the Championship game. The next two teams will play in the Consolation game.
    • If teams are tied after the preliminary round, tie breakers will be as follows:
      • Head to head competition
      • Least goals given up
      • Goals scored
      • Coin toss
  • Each team will be allowed one-one minute time-out during each game on Championship day Tie games on Championship day will be decided in the following manner:
    • a. 1st tiebreaker-10 minute sudden death overtime period
    • b. 2nd tie breaker-a shootout to run as follows:
      Coaches will divide their teams into five player pools and designate them 1, 2, and 3. Starting at the same time from center ice each player in pool 1 will shoot on the opposing goalie. The team that out scores the other team will be the winner. If the game is still tied after all five players have shot, then the five players in pool 2 from each team will repeat the shootout. If the game is still tied then the players in pool 3 will shoot it out. This process will continue until one team has outscored the other. Coaches may change goalies at their discretion.
